Semmelweis Klinikák — overview

The way in is a low, single-storey building on the corner of Üllői út and Szigony utca, from which escalators lead straight down to a platform 20.07 m underground. Behind it is a five-tunnel station with a central island platform, opened on 31 December 1976 with the first section of line M3 and known simply as Klinikák ("Clinics") until 2019.

Its current name points to Semmelweis University, Budapest's medical school, whose clinics cluster around Ludovika tér. During the renovation of the central section, trains passed through without stopping from July 2020, and the station reopened together with Corvin-negyed and Kálvin tér on 14 May 2022. Thanks to that entrance building, passengers come up straight onto the street with no underpass in between.

Did you know? The renaming was announced by then-Mayor István Tarlós to mark Semmelweis University's 250th anniversary.

When it opened on 31 December 1976 the station was simply Klinikák, after the university clinics nearby. In 2019 it was renamed Semmelweis Klinikák to name the university explicitly, and the renovated station reopened in May 2022.
