Újpest-központ ↔ Kőbánya-Kispest
The M3 (Blue) is the longest metro line in Budapest: 20 stations from Újpest-központ to Kőbánya-Kispest. It crosses the whole city along its north–south axis, serving Nyugati pályaudvar, the Deák tér hub and Kálvin tér. The entire line was renovated between 2017 and 2023.
The first six-station section of the blue line opened on 31 December 1976, between Deák Ferenc tér and Nagyvárad tér. On 29 March 1980 it reached Kőbánya-Kispest in the south, and in the north it grew step by step: to Lehel tér (then Élmunkás tér) in 1981, to Árpád híd (today Göncz Árpád városközpont) in 1984 and finally to Újpest-központ on 14 December 1990. That made it the longest line in the city: 20 stations and 16.4 km in service.
From November 2017 to 22 May 2023 the whole line was rebuilt section by section, with new track, step-free stations with lifts and refurbished trains from the original manufacturer; replacement buses covered each closed stretch. The M3 is the busiest line and stays on the Pest side all the way: it never crosses to Buda.
