M2 — Déli pályaudvar ↔ Örs vezér tere

The M2 (Red) links Buda and Pest, connecting its two termini: Déli pályaudvar and Örs vezér tere. It runs under the Danube and serves Parliament (Kossuth Lajos tér), the Deák Ferenc tér hub and Keleti pályaudvar. It opened in 1970.

History of the line

A 1950 government decree ordered the second metro line, but work stopped in 1954 for financial and political reasons and only resumed in 1963. The first section, from Fehér út (today Örs vezér tere) to Deák tér, opened on 2 April 1970; the Deák tér–Déli pályaudvar section followed on 22 December 1972. It was the first line to cross under the Danube to Buda, and until 2014 the only metro on the Buda side.

The M2 is a deep-level line: Széll Kálmán tér is its deepest station, about 38 m below the street. The stations were renovated in stages between 2004 and 2007, and the old Soviet-built trains were replaced by Alstom Metropolis sets, the same family of trains that runs driverless on the M4.
