Nagyvárad tér — overview

Just 7.06 m below the crossing of Üllői út and Haller utca–Orczy út, this shallow, cut-and-cover station with a central island platform was where line M3 began its life. It opened on 31 December 1976 as the southern terminus of the first section, hosted the opening ceremony, and stayed the end of the line until March 1980.

It became a terminus again during the 2019–2022 renovation works, with trains reversing on a siding towards Népliget. The station itself was the very last to be rebuilt: closed from 14 May 2022, it reopened on 22 May 2023, the day the line's five-and-a-half-year reconstruction was declared complete. Escalators lead up to the underpass below the junction.

Did you know? The track towards Kőbánya-Kispest curves to the left along the entire length of the platform, and the gallery above the tracks used to display transport-themed pictures before the renovation.

Nearby attractions and places

The square is named after the city of Nagyvárad, now Oradea in Romania. Several hospitals and Semmelweis University medical buildings surround it, and the Orczy-kert park is nearby, so patients, visitors and health workers make up a large share of passengers. Residents of the nearby estates also come here to change to the trams or head into the centre.
