Arany János utca — overview
In a 1983 poem, Sándor Kányádi wished for nothing more than a bench of his own down in the metro station named after János Arany. On 10 May 2003, his 74th birthday, BKV granted it: the bench is still there, with a brass plaque carrying the poem (Hiúság, 'Vanity') and the line 'This is Sándor Kányádi's bench; whoever is tired may rest on it.' It survived the recent renovation.
The station lies between Deák Ferenc tér and Nyugati pályaudvar, beneath Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út, with its single entrance on Podmaniczky Frigyes tér. It opened on 30 December 1981. Deep-level at 24.02 m, it has an island platform served by three escalators. It was closed for rebuilding from 7 March 2020 to 20 March 2023.

You surface in the middle of Lipótváros, the banking and government quarter of District V. St Stephen’s Basilica is a block to the south, and Szabadság tér, with the US Embassy and its monuments, is a short walk away. On weekdays the station fills with office workers; at weekends it is mostly visitors heading for the Basilica.

It opened on 30 December 1981 with the section from Deák Ferenc tér to Lehel tér, then called Élmunkás tér. It was the first station of the central section to close for reconstruction, in March 2020, and reopened three years later in March 2023.
