Fővám tér — overview
On the Pest bank, at the end of Szabadság híd (Liberty Bridge), Fővám tér sits between the Great Market Hall and Corvinus University. From here the tunnels dive under the Danube to Buda. The station received its permit on 16 January 2014, the ninth on the line, and opened on 28 March 2014.
At 32 m below ground it is the deepest station on M4, reached in two flights of four escalators via an intermediate level. Sporaarchitects designed its dramatic bare-concrete interior, and skylights set into the new traffic-free square let daylight reach the platform. With Szent Gellért tér it shared international awards, including ArchDaily's Building of the Year 2015.

Nearby attractions and places
The Great Market Hall, Budapest’s best-known food market, stands right on the square, next to the riverside main building of Corvinus University. Walk across the green Szabadság híd to reach Gellért Hill, or follow the embankment to the Bálna, a glass-and-steel cultural and shopping centre. The southern end of Váci utca, the pedestrian shopping street, starts here too.

It opened on 28 March 2014 with the first section of M4. Its design had already won a Hungarian architecture media award in 2006, but construction lagged: in 2008 it was announced that a tunnel boring machine would have to wait two to four months under the Danube for this station to catch up.
