Széll Kálmán tér — overview
Under Buda's busiest transport hub, between Batthyány tér and Déli pályaudvar, lies the deepest stop on the red line: its platform is 38.6 metres below the street, the largest level difference anywhere on M2. That depth explains the escalators – the longest in Budapest, four of them rising straight into the fan-shaped entrance hall that dominates the square.
The station opened on 22 December 1972 with the line's second section and was known for almost four decades as Moszkva tér (Moscow Square), like the square above it. Both took the name of Kálmán Széll, a 19th-century prime minister, in 2011. The station was refurbished in 2006.

Széll Kálmán tér is where much of Buda changes vehicles: trams 4 and 6 start their run along the Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard) here, and buses climb towards the Castle District and the Buda Hills. The Mammut shopping centre is right beside the square, the Millenáris cultural park is close by, and many visitors set off from here on foot up to Buda Castle, Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion.
