Batthyány tér — overview
On the Buda bank of the Danube, the metro and the suburban railway to Szentendre share one underpass beneath Batthyány tér: turn left out of the metro exit and a wide corridor leads straight to the southern terminus of the H5 HÉV line. The station sits between Kossuth Lajos tér and Széll Kálmán tér and is one of the few M2 stops built to the five-tunnel 'Budapest-style' design.
It opened on 22 December 1972, the same day the HÉV was extended underground here, and quickly became a busy interchange. Its original three escalators all had to run non-stop, leaving no spare, so the 2005 refurbishment replaced them with four narrower ones and brightened the lighting and halls.

Nearby attractions and places
Up on the square stand the Baroque St Anne’s Church and the former market hall, now home to shops. Walk to the embankment for one of the classic views of the city: the Hungarian Parliament directly across the river and the Chain Bridge to the south. Plenty of people only pass through, changing to the HÉV for Szentendre or to trams 19 and 41 along the Buda riverside.

It opened on 22 December 1972 as part of M2’s second section, from Deák Ferenc tér to Déli pályaudvar. The Szentendre HÉV was brought underground to the square at the same time, which is why Batthyány tér has worked as a Buda interchange ever since. The station got its current look in the 2005 refurbishment.
