How to get to Buda Castle & Castle Hill by metro
Overview
Buda Castle and the Castle District sit on top of Castle Hill on the Buda side of the Danube and form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you'll find the Royal Palace, the Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church. No metro runs up the hill, so from the nearest station you reach the top on foot, by the Buda Castle Funicular or by the Castle bus.

How to get there
Take the M2 (red) line to Batthyány tér, on the riverbank opposite Castle Hill. From there it's about a 10-minute walk to Clark Ádám tér, where the Buda Castle Funicular carries you up to the palace. Alternatively, from Széll Kálmán tér (the M2 terminus) the number 16 Castle bus winds directly up into the Castle District.
Good to know
💡 The funicular needs a separate ticket and can involve queues at peak times; walking up to the Fisherman's Bastion is often quicker and free. Comfortable shoes help on the cobbled streets. You can also walk up into the district from Batthyány tér towards the Vienna Gate in about 15–20 minutes.
