Hősök tere — overview
Andrássy út ends at Heroes' Square (Hősök tere), and so does the M1's long run beneath it: the station lies under the square, between Bajza utca and Széchenyi fürdő. It opened on 2 May 1896 as Aréna út.
Until 1973 this was the last underground stop. Beyond it, trains climbed to the surface and wound through the Városliget, the City Park, via a stop at Állatkert (the zoo) to a terminus by the Széchenyi Baths. The 1973 extension diverted the line here into a new tunnel under the park running on to Mexikói út, and the surface stretch was closed. The waterproofing of the tunnel between here and Kodály körönd was renewed in 1987, and the whole line was overhauled in 1995.

Nearby attractions and places
One of Budapest’s signature squares: the Millennium Monument is flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Műcsarnok (Hall of Art), and behind it the City Park opens up, with Vajdahunyad Castle, home of the Hungarian Museum of Agriculture. Expect tourists, museum-goers and families heading into the park, plus several trolleybus and bus routes on the square.
