Oktogon — overview
Beneath the octagonal square where Andrássy út crosses the Nagykörút, Pest's Grand Boulevard ring road, the M1 stops between Opera and Vörösmarty utca. The station opened with the original line on 2 May 1896; for a time, like the square above it, it was called November 7. tér.
The Boulevard is the reason the whole line is so shallow: the main sewer beneath it set the maximum depth, which limited the tunnel's internal height to 2.65 m. During the 1995 reconstruction a crossover was built into the tunnel just towards Vörösmarty utca so that the line can be run as two separate halves. That meant removing 60 m of the old roof, and a prefabricated replacement was used to get Boulevard traffic moving again quickly.

Oktogon is one of Pest’s busiest crossroads: trams 4 and 6 run along the Boulevard here, and the bars and restaurants of Liszt Ferenc tér and the Liszt Academy concert hall are a few streets away. Office workers, students and shoppers fill the station by day; at night it becomes a natural meeting point for the area’s bars and clubs.
